Best Overall - GOHOME

  • hugs you tightly but doesn’t restrict movements;
  • can be properly secured inside the duvet cover;
  • breathable cotton fabric.

So, I will start my review of the best weighted blankets in Canada with the GOHOME model. In my opinion, it has everything you can expect from a good blanket: evenly distributed beads that don’t restrict your movements, durable materials, and breathable cotton layers.

The blanket features 7-layer construction, which prevents the leakage of the glass beads and ensures their even distribution. The diamond-pattern quilting on the surface also keeps the beads in small clusters, so you can get the feel of a wrapping hug.

The GOHOME blanket has various size and weight options, so you can easily choose the one that will work well for your body composition. Also, the blanket isn’t too heavy and allows you to shift between positions as you sleep without feeling trapped.

The outer encasement is made of natural cotton. It helps wick away moisture and promotes the air circulation inside the blanket, thus preventing you from sleeping hot. Also, the encasement has 8 corner loops that will help you secure the blanket inside the duvet cover.

As a wrap-up, I can say that the GOHOME blanket may suit anyone from kids to large adult sleepers. It’s comfortable, soothing, and doesn’t sleep hot.

Best for Winter - Buzio

  • reversible design;
  • ceramic beads instead of glass;
  • quiet and snuggly.

Now, Canada generally has a colder climate than the US. That’s why when you choose a good weighted blanket in Canada, it has to be on the warmer side, in most cases. So, meet the Buzio, a blanket with a dual-sided design for all-year-round use.

The ‘winter’ side is made of fuzzy Sherpa fleece that feels like you’re hugging a teddy bear. The ‘summer’ side is also made of fleece but has a much smoother and cooler feel and will wick away moisture very effectively.

The Buzio features nano-ceramic beads rather than glass ones. Ceramic beads, aside from being quieter, also adjust better to temperature fluctuations and make the blanket comfortable to be used throughout the year.

Finally, both sides of the blanket have anti-pill properties and don’t create static electricity. The latter is rare among synthetic materials, so if you’re annoyed by the sound of the humidifier — which helps prevent static — you may want to purchase the Buzio blanket for a peaceful sleep.

The Buzio blanket is versatile and comfortable, and you can comfortably use it throughout the whole year. So, if you’re looking for something durable and snuggly, I recommend you go for this model.

Best for Hot Sleepers - YnM YnM

  • includes warm and cool covers in the set;
  • even bead distribution;
  • 6 different colors available.

Another option in my review of the best weighted blankets in Canada is dedicated to those who are prone to overheating. The YnM weighted blanket features breathable materials and comes with two washable covers — a warm and a cool one — that can enhance the properties of the blanket.

The cooling cover is made of polyester and is almost unnoticeable. It can deal with night sweats, as it allows for proper air circulation. The winter cover is made of Minky microfiber that adapts to your body temperature changes during colder months without making you uncomfortably hot.

Also, the warm cover features a 3D dot pattern. This pattern adds a slight massage effect and enhances the stress-relieving properties of the blanket.

The YnM is probably one of the quietest weighted blankets that I’ve tested. It has 4.7” x 4.7” pockets and is quilted with fiberfill to prevent beads from leaking and shuffling. So, it can offer you a tight and snuggly hug for your whole body.

I think that the YnM is a pretty decent weighted blanket. It seems pretty durable and will ensure an optimal temperature in your bed throughout the year.

Best Budget Pick - Viewstar

  • great value for money;
  • breathable cotton duvet cover;
  • uses small glass beads for a quieter sleep.

When reviewing the best weighted blankets in Canada, I knew I should add a budget-friendly option to my list. Because everyone deserves good sleep, no matter the budget. So, meet the Viewstar, a weighted blanket that won’t tear a hole in your pocket!

This blanket has everything to do the job and leaves out bells and whistles. With 7-layer construction and double-layer padding around the beads, the beads will stay in place and will distribute evenly without lumping.

The beads, according to the manufacturer, are smaller than in other models. They vary from 0.8 to 1 mm in diameter and may work for overly sensitive sleepers, as the smaller size makes them quieter. I’m a sensitive sleeper myself and I didn’t hear any annoying noises while I was testing this blanket.

Finally, the outer layers are made of natural cotton. This fabric can withstand active use for years and doesn’t interfere with air circulation, so you can sleep cooler.

Having tested the Viewstar blanket, I found it to be no worse than more expensive options on the market. The blanket is durable, breathable, and can offer you a good hug, helping you fall asleep quickly.

Best for Heavy Sleepers - Luna

Luna Weighted Blanket

  • 7-layer construction for an even weight distribution;
  • multiple sizes and weight variations available (up to 30 lbs.), would work for a wide variety of sleepers and different body types;
  • has 8 ties to fasten to the cover securely and minimize shifting.

Another weighted blanket I absolutely enjoyed testing for my review is the Luna. Not only does it use safe, hypoallergenic materials but also comes in a variety of sizes and weight options, including extra-heavy variations for larger folks.

The Luna is an interesting find. Being one of the best weighted blankets on the market, it has 7 layers, uses medical-grade glass beads, and features a quilt-like design. This means you don’t have to worry about the beads escaping from their sections and shifting the weight. Additionally, such a construction makes the blanket feel very cozy. You won’t even notice the beads (which, in some other models, often feel like a bunch of tennis balls lying on top of your body).

Another cool thing about this blanket is the fastening method. Using 8 ties, it can be fit inside a cover securely and stays there all through the night. You won’t be disturbed by the blanket shifting or slipping out of the cover.

The Luna uses safe, hypoallergenic materials and can be suited even for sensitive sleepers. It also allows for unobstructed air circulation during the night and creates a temperature-neutral sleeping environment. So, if you are a hot sleeper, you don’t have to worry about sweating under this weighted blanket.

All in all, the Luna has a lot to offer. It can cater to different needs and would work for almost any sleeper. It is quality-made and has a smart construction to prevent any potential comfort-related issues during the night.

Do Weighted Blankets Work?

After the launch of the Gravity blanket on Kickstarter in 2017, everyone was so hyped up about weighted blankets, so no wonder certain misconceptions arose.

Let’s find out what is true, how these blankets work, and whether they can really work for you.

According to research, weighted blankets may help improve sleep in people with certain health conditions, such as:

  • Onset insomnia. A 2015 study found that a weighted blanket can reduce the symptoms of mild and moderate insomnia, such as tossing and turning, while helping the participants maintain deeper sleep with fewer awakenings.
  • Anxiety. A weighted blanket wrapped around your body triggers a relaxation response that can reduce the level of stress hormones and transfer you from the ‘fight-or-flight’ to the ‘rest-and-digest’ mode.
  • Restless leg syndrome. A comfy and tight hug around your legs can work as a counterstimulation and override the uncomfortable sensations.
  • Autism and ADHD. Weighted blankets were initially used as an occupational therapy tool for children with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. ADHD and ASD share the problems of sensory processing and make people who have these disorders generally more anxious. So, if you — or someone close to you — have ADHD or autism, weighted blanket therapy may help improve sleep.

“If you suffer from chronic stress — which often manifests in anxiety and difficulties with falling asleep — you can try weighted blankets too.”

How to Choose a Quality Weighted Blanket in Canada?

We all know that there’s no universal product for everyone. Still, some general recommendations on finding a suitable weighted blanket in Canada do exist.

And I will list them right below.

Weighted blankets are designed to hug your body without hanging loose. That’s why their sizes may differ from the standard blanket sizes. I recommend you check your mattress size before shopping for a weighted blanket and then, match it with the dimensions I’ll list below:

  • Twin bed: 38 x 72 inches for an average user or 48 x 72 inches for a larger one.
  • Full bed: 48 x 72 inches for an average sleeper or 56 x 72 inches for a heavier one.
  • Queen bed: Queen-size blankets typically match the size of Queen beds and measure 60 x 80 inches.
  • King bed: 80 x 87 inches for average users or 88 x 104 inches for heavier ones. Note that King blankets might be too heavy for a single sleeper, so they’re typically used for couples.

There also are blankets that measure 41 x 60 inches. They work best for kids, but adults can use them as throws, too.

Weighted blankets come in different weights starting at 5-6 pounds for kids and up to 30-35 pounds for overweight sleepers and couples.

A good rule of thumb is to choose a blanket that weighs around 10-12% of your body weight. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, choose a 15 lbs blanket.

But what if your weight falls between the blanket sizes?

In this case, I recommend you size up. For example, if you weigh 170 pounds, go for an 18-lbs or 20-lbs blanket. A lighter option might fail to offer you a tight hug, so you’ll just end up wasting your money.

“Individuals with limited mobility, on the contrary, should opt for a lighter blanket that won’t interfere with their movements.”

The construction of your weighted blanket will determine its durability and the amount of noise it will produce. Most of the modern blankets have 7-layer construction:

  • a layer of glass or ceramic beads right in the middle;
  • two layers of fiber padding on each side of the layer of beads;
  • a duvet cover (on both sides).

This construction ensures good durability and can block noise that the beads make as they shuffle.

Also, opt for quilted designs that have smaller pockets. They prevent the beads from migrating to the corners and ensure even distribution of the filling around your body.

“Ceramic beads feel quieter than glass beads, so if you’re sensitive to noises, keep this in mind when shopping.”

Aside from that, some weighted blankets have sewn-in loops around the perimeter. These loops can help you additionally secure the blanket inside the duvet cover, so it will stay even and won’t form lumps.

Now, you’ll probably use your weighted blanket long-term. That’s why it has to feel equally comfortable during winter and summer months.

Look for models with a natural or semi-natural duvet cover made of cotton or bamboo rayon. These materials are breathable and will withdraw your body heat and absorb moisture so that you can sleep comfortably.

As for synthetic materials, I recommend that you pay attention to fleece and microfiber. These materials adapt to the temperature changes in the environment and stay comfortably warm without making you drown in your sweat.

If you live in Canada, choosing a good weighted blanket might be challenging, as the choice is very wide. But now you know at least five great options to consider.  All the models reviewed here have good value for money and stand out among the others due to high material quality and great relaxing properties.

favourite weighted blanket

My most favorite one was the GOHOME blanket. In my opinion, it offers the comfiest hug and doesn’t feel too heavy. I also liked the loops that can help you fix the blanket inside the duvet cover so that it doesn’t migrate. And of course, a good cooling effect of the cotton duvet cover will make the GOHOME a good pick for those who are prone to overheating.
