In order to understand more about it, we’ve searched through the work-life balance statistics in Canada in many sources, including news, official reports, and more than a thousand other links. Through this research, we’ve come by 11 noteworthy facts.

In 2020, 14.8 Million Canadians aged 15 or above were working full-time.

First of all, we needed to understand how many people at what age work full-time in Canada. This could show us the general situation of the country regarding how many people care about dedicating their time to work.

Considering the fact that the population of Canada was 38 million in 2020, the statistics show that 38% of the people in Canada work full-time. This number included all the people who were 15 years old or older. 14.8 million full-time workers is not a small number for a country of this population. 

This means that the rest of the people work either part-time or in other forms, or don’t work at all. However, when we talk about work-life balance statistics in Canada, we are referring to full-time workers, because they take more time off their leisure time.

An average Canadian worked 39.1 hours a week back in 2020.

The next thing we were curious to know was the number of hours a full-time worker usually works per week. Even though there are numbers that are written to be applied in employee contracts, usually, some employees end up working more than those hours or less. That is why we have thought of looking this up.

On average, 35 to 40 hours per week is the average time for a full-time job around the world. In Canada, the average usual number of work hours per week is 39.9 hours. However, the actual average is 39.1 hours. This number is very close to the hours supposed to be served by employees. This means that depending on the industry, there will be people who have worked even longer hours. 

56% of Canadians say that work always comes before life for them.

One of the things that can truly reflect the actual work-life balance statistics is what people consider to come first in their lives. This is not based on their choices but based on the situations that come up.

In a survey, Canadians have reported that they usually find themselves having to deal with work rather than life. This means that they either have to be involved with their work even after the work hours, or their minds are always busy with work, or that they can’t put aside enough time for their leisure.

These stats mean that there truly is a lack of complete balance between work and life among Canadians. However, the degrees to which this is lacking has to be unveiled little by little.

42% of full-time Canadian employees say that work has made it harder for them to spend time with their families and friends.

Now, let us say that the work-life balance is actually lacking in Canada. We should know how many people actually find it impossible or hard to spend time with their families and friends because of work.

The statistics show that 42% of Canadians who work full-time have reported that work always puts a strain on their relationship with their loved ones. This is actually very close to half of the full-time workers, which would be around 6 million people. That is, again, a large number for a country of 38 million people.

This means that the rest of the full-time employees (58 percent) have somehow found a way to either deal with their work-life balance problems or do not have any problems with it.

Around 4% of Canadians work more than 50 hours a week, which is above the average.

We realized that the average work hours per week were 40. We should also look for the possible number of people who are spending more time than they should on work, which will completely take away their work-life balance. 

Regardless of the fact that for some jobs it is necessary to spend lots of time, it has become apparent that 4% of full-time workers in Canada spend more than 50 hours a week working. 

This number automatically cancels out any possibility for the existence of the work-life balance. 40 hours a week is considered by many to be normal. That number is the result of years of work and experimentation of employees, that is why working for so long could not only make an issue in one’s work-life balance, but also in their life.

75% of employees in Canada are either actively disengaged or not engaged in work matters.

The fact that some workers lack the work-life balance in their lives could lead to lots of bad consequences for a business. One of these things is the fact that the workers are not engaged in the achievements of the business or the work duties anymore. That is why they pick up an approach of staying at the office and pretending to work, while their minds are just busy with a lot of other things.

In Canada, 60% of full-time employees are reported not to be engaged in the matters of work, and 15% are reported to be totally and actively disengaged from work.

That is only something that could result from the lack of worker’s satisfaction. The worker is always thinking about something else, which could include a lack of money, better work conditions, or other job offers that they have received.

In Canada, 46% of employees experience job burnout in the work atmosphere.

There is one concept that is closely tied with work-life balance and being disengaged with work. Employee burnout happens when the employee is tired or stressed from the working environment. It can happen when the employee is confused or not sure about their well-being at work. Sometimes it can mean that the employee is tired of working. That is why we went after this data to see how many people actually want to run away from work.

Around 46% of full-time workers have reported that they experience burnout in the work atmosphere because they are unsure about their financial situation, have other problems, or they work too much to be productive anymore.

33% of Canadians the source of their work-life balance problems to be the upper management at their work.

We have seen that the employee burnout or a disengagement from work could be the result of the lack of the work-life balance in Canada. Now it is time to see what can cause the work-life balance issues. 

Around 33% of full-time employees in Canada have reported that they feel like the problems in their work-life balance roots from their upper management. Sometimes businesses don’t understand the employees enough, and these problems are prone to happen.

Things that can fix that include paying attention to rewarding the employee in return for their work, allowing them to take time off for their families, and not expecting them to work long hours.

More than 35% of Canadians reported that they have felt more work-life balance.

We have seen some statistics from the past. Let us also check out some of the things that have changed in the past and are predicted to change, as well. 

Even though there is a lack of work-life balance among full-time employees, 35% of them have said that they feel like there is more balance between their professional life and their personal life as time goes on. This number is predicted to go higher as more businesses start to pay attention to their employees' well-being.

56 percent of Canadians have to stay at work until late.

We have mentioned working till late as one of the reasons why there is a lack of work-life balance in Canada among the 4% of people who work longer hours. However, let us also see how many Canadians actually have to stay at work until late. 

While 56% of full-time employees in Canada have to stay at the office to work late, 33% of them say that they had to stay up late to work at home.

Working at home or at the office is not only disruptive towards the existing balance of sleeping times and work versus life, it can also put the employee at risk of so many health conditions.

Among employees in Canada, 75% have no problem with their work-life balance.

Taking a look at the work-life balance statistics in Canada, we can understand many things, except what the public opinion is on their situation. That is why, as the last thing to uncover, we have searched through the directories of people saying whether they actually have a problem with their full-time situation or not.

75% of Canadian employees say that they are satisfied with their work-life balance. This means that even though there are some people who work longer hours or work at home, they don’t have any problem with it either. Personal priorities differ in different people. That is why it is important to try to stick to the increasing trend in the work-life balance statistics in Canada.
